Entry #7 WRITING

This was very interesting so a as to reflect upon the way we teach process writing to our students. Do we always give them the time to go over the three steps? I believe that the the prewriting stage is really important because is where they will wet the tools to make a good piece of writing, of course they will also have to showa good management og the language, but the ideas and vocabulary are fundamental. One thing that called my attention was that a "publishing" stage was not mentioned. I usually make students publish their work, Depending on the task it can be to post it on a blog, to write it on a colour page, to create a mini book, to add illustrations to it. I think it gives a great closure to their work. The second part of the activity made me think of the way we have to think about academic writing. I realized that we must not forget to go over the stages we ask our students to do. Obviously that our analysis demands another type of research and planning but we hav...

I found SFL very interesting. Even though there were some thing that are mentioned here that I use in my classes it was fantastic to have the theoretical background of it. I try to use visible thinking with my students so It is inevitable to connect it to SFL because we need to ask ourselves questions we need to go deeper that simply what the words say.  I do believe that we a social beings so it everything we do is connected to a context. Nothing makes sense if we do not contextualize it. We would end up , in our case, just teaching grammar structures which I don't think is the correct way to take.  I do believe that all our students should have the same opportunities and I do believe that SFL is very important not only helps with second language acquisition or any content area but also with what I find ,as a teacher,my main aim: critical thinking. METACOGNITIVE ANALYSIS  VIdeos are really helpful at the time of teaching and learning things. They are appealing and in many cases, students prefer watching a video to reading some notes. Of course we should be very careful at the time of choosing the material we want to share. We need to be sure that it is the appropriate level, that it is the convenient length and that the language used on it is understandable for students. In this particular case, the video was very clear so as to explain the concepts and the animation was enjoyable.    According to British linguist J.L. Austin (1911-1960)there are two types of statements; CONSTATIVE statements and PERFORMATIVE statements. Constative statements can be True or False according to the context. Performative statements are meant to inspire actions. Sometimes there are words that are actions themselves, they are called SPEECH ACTS, some examples are: ordering, promising apologizing warning marrying among others.However,...

ENTRY #2 Advice on Academic Writing

I do believe slides are great for summarizing concepts. Of course they must be accompanied by an explanation or further reading in case the reader does not have the background knowledge to understand what is being summarized. It is a great starting point so as to trigger curiosity and wanting to learn more about the topic I think they are a great took for oral presentations. They make a positive visual impact that engage the audience It was really hard work to summarize all the information. If I had to do this activity some years ago I would have definitely used PowerPoint Presentations for this, but this time I have chosen Google Slides because I got used to working online. On the one hand,Google slides gives me the possibility of accessing to it from any device and it saves my work automatically as I am working on it. On the other hand, the drawback I have found is that you must have internet connection for this to be done. I have download some “ Add ons” so as to be able to m...
